CROSSOVER: Authentic, non-linear, off-road, and explosive—this is what you’ll find in my October residency at @colourfactorylondon . Every weekend, I’ll be presenting some of my favorite DJs and producers to deliver high-quality, diverse club nights, each representing different styles and blowing our minds with new sounds.

BCLIP

BClip is a talented producer and DJ of Colombian electronic music.

When I asked him what it means to be a good DJ, he described an ideal vision where careful and personal curation merges with a performance that delivers solid energy, allowing the audience to fully enjoy the experience. Although he acknowledges that this definition is complex and evolves over time, his approach is distinguished by his identity as a 'picotero.' Inspired by the picó (a sound system characteristic of Colombia’s northern coast), he creates dystopian and diverse musical atmospheres, grounded in his Latin American ghetto roots.

Regarding the importance of a DJ in the electronic music scene, he sees the DJ as the evangelizer of the audience. He emphasizes the crucial role of the DJ in spreading music and creating the party, acting as the true platform for the public to discover the producers behind the tracks he plays.

His journey into electronic music is deeply influenced by his hood context in Barranquilla, where limited job opportunities led him to channel his passion for music through picó and parties. From organizing reggaeton and rap parties in his teenage years to venturing into music production with a borrowed computer, his path reflects unwavering dedication. Being a DJ, for him, is a means of spreading his own productions and those of other artists he admires, allowing him to evolve while staying rooted in his origins.

With 17 years of experience, his musical influences are broad and varied. From soukous and salsa to hardhouse and cumbia, his music selection is deeply shaped by the musical context of the early 2000s, where genres like nu metal and reggaeton coexisted in his repertoire.

For the Colour Factory night, we can expect a disruptive and surprising performance. Through a deeply diverse selection, he promises to break down the barriers of what is considered Latin and/or urban. This set will not only showcase his technical skills but also his ability to connect with the audience on a profound and transformative level.

BLUE CANARIÑHO

Blue Canariñho is a Visual / Audio artist based in London. In 2020 he birthed the Love In The Endz radio show on the legendary Reprezent Radio, giving a voice to underrepresented scenes from around the world and sharing them with the London landscape.

The radio show more recently birthed the collective / label of the same name, continuing to support global sounds and showcase talent from different Endz around the world.

For Blue, being a good DJ consists of the following: being yourself, bringing something unique, and understanding that it’s a dialogue with the audience. According to him, the key lies in the energy, the vibe, and track selection, rather than technical perfection. He’s seen DJs whose mixing skills aren’t exceptional, but whose energy and musical selection manage to win over the crowd.

Regarding the importance of a DJ in the electronic music scene, he emphasized that the role is to deliver a performance and introduce the audience to unreleased tracks. A good DJ must dig through archives, find underground gems, and combine them with fresh cuts from the next generation of artists. While he acknowledges the value of a well-placed classic in an underground set, he stresses that only playing hits is a missed opportunity to offer something truly unique.

His inspiration to become a DJ came from his time as a graffiti artist. He needed music to accompany him while painting, but the mixes he found weren’t unique or emotional enough. He decided to learn to mix himself, which led him to fall in love with the craft. After moving to Ibiza with just £500, he studied some of the best DJs in the world, an experience he considers a true education in the art of DJing.

With 11 years of experience, he started his career as a teenager and never thought he would still be playing today. Despite not seeing himself as a natural performer, once he plays the first song, he completely immerses himself in the music.

His musical influences don’t come from big artists but from those who create purely out of passion. He finds his favorite music on SoundCloud and Bandcamp, platforms where producers are just starting out and finding their own sound. He doesn’t like overly polished music and prefers to discover unknown talents.
